Sunshine can be converted to electricity and used to heat domestic hot water or preheat water for space heating.  Solar domestic water heating is one of the most cost effective solar applications at present.  Typical roof mounted panels are 4 feet by 8 feet glazed boxes.  For a description of a very simple system, click here.

A more conventional system includes a hot water storage tank installed near the existing water heater.
